[Henderson's] n. (1) emission of radiant energy in the form of waves or particles; (2) en­ergy radiated in the form of waves or par­ticles, e.g. electromagnetic radiation (radio waves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays) or emissions from radioactive sources (e.g. beta rays). Often refers esp. to that radiation potentially harmful to living organisms, e.g. ionizing radiation (e.g. X- and gamma rays and streams of α- and β-particles, emitted from radioactive elements); (3) (evol.) the rel­atively rapid increase in numbers of new species of a particular type of animal or plant and their diversification and spread into many new habitats, e.g. the mam­malian radiation that occurred after the end of the Cretaceous period when most present-day types of mammals arose.
