[Henderson's] n. principal light-capturing pigment of plants, algae and cyanobacteria, consisting of a porphyrin (tetrapyrrole) ring with a magnesium atom at the centre and esterified to a long-chain aliphatic alcohol (phytol), different chlorophylls having different side chains. In plants and algae, chlorophyll is located in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts. It absorbs light best in the red and violet-blue regions of the spectrum, chemically distinct chlorophylls having different absorption maxima.
